Playground is one large musical game with only one rule: making music together.
Through building a strong group connection, using non-verbal communication - a constant flow of music is created spontaneously on spot. Around the space are spread different musical pieces, interactive musical games, texts, improvisations and other communal music-making means. Playground researches, within a community, the perspectives of experiencing, creating and observing through the world of music and non-verbal communication.
Playground was premiered as part of Goedlaak Concert series at Laak Theater, 2014
The participants of Playground are Goedlaak musicians and the audience, with no distinction between. Both are free to travel around the space and take part in the different musical event contracting the whole. Each can initiate a musical happening, participate with or without invite, observe and listen. Some musical games which require higher skills are performed by Goedlaak musicians.
No pre-order is given to determine the events on Playground's time-line.
The result is unique at each time the game is played. The communal and individual decisions upon actions of all participants dissolve to complete composition summing its small partials, and represents the spirit of the group playing the game in the specific moment in time and space.
LMA in music: Non-verbal communication
The concept of Playground was born as well out of the research 'Laban Movement Analysis in music' made by Goedlaak member Maya Felixbrodt.
LMA is a system for analysis of all human movement invented by Hungarian choreographer Rudulf Laban.
The workshop, preliminary to the Playground game, explores one branch of LMA system called Efforts. Time, Space, Weight and Flow are four Efforts through which we give expression in communication.
Through theoretical background, followed by practical exercises, the participants research their different uses of each Effort, in relation to self and environment.
The discoveries and questions resolving from ones movement exploration, will later come in use in while playing Playground using almost exclusively non-verbal communication.
